These are the same species of nematodes that traveled to the International Space Station for NASA.
Astro Nematodes are beneficial Steinernema feltiae nematodes, that feed on Thrips and Fungal Gnats. They kill and consume a variety of insect pests that have a developing (larval or pupal) stage of life in the soil. They have also been known to kill above ground stages of adults, nymphs and larvae.
After being applied to the soil, the nematodes locate pests and enter through various body openings or directly through the body wall. Once inside, the nematodes produce bacteria that is injected into the pest's blood. S feltiae release the bacteria in order to create food and a hospitable environment for their own reproduction. As the food resources within the dead pest become scarce, the nematodes exit and immediately begin searching for a new host. As long as there is a suitable host, they will continue to survive and reduce your pest population.
We recommend using 250 million Astro Nematodes for each acre of fruit trees
Astro nematodes arrive alive. As long as the temperature during travel did not exceed 100 degrees F, the nematodes should have survived the travel and have a shelf life of 14 days. Keep the unopened package in refrigerator until ready to apply.
Astro Nematodes should be applied at dusk or early morning, to damp areas. We recommend you water the area first, then apply the nematodes, with a hose end sprayer or irrigation system.
Before applying the Astro nematodes, test the sprayer or watering device to determine how quickly it sprays/disperses and how much area can be covered per watering. This will determine how quickly you need to move, how many portions you need to divide your nematodes into, and thus, how many times you need to fill your preferred application device. (Again, assume 250 million nematodes, per acre.)
Stir or shake water and Astro Nematode mixture constantly to ensure even distribution. Cover the entire affected area.
For best results, keep soil moist for 2 weeks after applying Astro Nematodes.
Astro Nematodes, will not harm people, plants or pets, but they should not be eaten by people nor animals. Keep out of reach of children, avoid inhalation and avoid eye contact. If product comes into contact with eyes, flush thoroughly with water.
